IPL / Photofacial
IPL (intense pulsed light) Photofacials at Tourmaline Skin Care & Laser deliver outstanding results in restoring skin health, and providing deep rejuvenation, by using advanced intense pulsed light technology.
Photofacial treatments penetrate past the surface layer of skin into the dermis, targeting problem areas without damaging the surrounding tissue. As the pigment in the discolored portions of the skin absorbs the light energy, thermal energy is produced, breaking up the melanin from unwanted spots. This effectively delivers an even-toned complexion that appears brighter and more radiant.
Spider veins and broken capillaries (blood vessels) are also targeted, causing a reduction in skin redness. The heat absorbed stimulates the skin cells to increase collagen and elastin production, smoothing out fine lines and wrinkles. These two proteins are responsible for maintaining the youthfulness and structure of the facial skin.
A series of typically 3-6 treatment sessions, spaced four weeks apart, is recommended for optimal improvement. Overall, the IPL Photofacial is an effective way of maintaining attractive skin.

Treating acne with IPL / Photofacial
The use of IPL has been shown to be highly effective in reducing acne scars, as well as improving the texture and tone of the skin. The light and heat generated from photofacial treatments destroy acne-causing bacteria and shrink the sebaceous glands that are responsible for oil production. Your skin will be less prone to acne, resulting in clearer and overall healthier skin.
In addition to its effectiveness in treating acne, IPL can also be used to treat rosacea, which is a chronic condition characterized by redness, flushing, swelling, and broken blood vessels.
Am I a good candidate?
Patients who are experiencing skin discoloration such as age spots, hyperpigmentation, and melasma will see the most improvement from an IPL Photofacial. If you desire a clearer, even-toned complexion, you are a great candidate for this treatment. This treatment is also gentler on sensitive skin than laser resurfacing alternatives, however, is not suitable for all skin types.
You should not undergo an IPL Photofacial if you:
- Are taking or have taken Accutane in the past 6 months
- Are currently pregnant or breastfeeding
- Have a naturally darker skin tone
- Experience skin conditions such as eczema and psoriasis
- Have an active skin infection
IPL Photofacials work best for light to medium skin tones, as those with dark skin risk the chance of a change in skin pigment.
Recovery and downtime
You will be able to continue daily activities after; however, your skin will be sensitive for a few days after treatment, with slight swelling. Hot water and sun exposure should be avoided until your skin has healed from treatment. After treatment, some patients experience temporary redness that lasts up to one week.
Using sunscreen is important for maintaining your new and spotless skin.
Does IPL Photofacial hurt?
Mild discomfort may be experienced during treatment, with the sensation similar to a mild rubber band snap. Although well tolerated by most, a topical anesthetic is optional to ensure your comfort during the procedure.

Photofacials with IPL are quick, 30-minute procedures. This treatment uses IPL, or intense pulsed light, to treat skin damage deep within the epidermis. Photofacial treatments using IPL use light of different wavelengths. Light can penetrate the epidermis, or surface layer of skin, into the dermis, the second layer beneath it.
Light pulses can target pigment-producing skin cells. Light absorbs in the cells, which then converts into thermal energy. When this energy is converted into heat, it destroys the pigment-producing cells. It reduces acne by eliminating acne-causing bacteria and clearing skin blemishes. The skin’s imperfections are significantly reduced after a few treatments, resulting in a healthy, more youthful appearance.
